By Brian Weis

Whether you have played a course 20+ times a year or looking to play the course for the first time, insights from an insider can help enhance your golf experience. Below is an interview with Matt Reams who shares some valuable tidbits about the course, memorable holes and must eats and treats at the 19th.

Give Our Readers An Overview of the Golf Course/Property
Tapatio Springs dates back to 1982 as one of the few destination resorts in Texas with a genius course routing designed by popular golf course architect - Bill Johnston. Renovated for enhanced condition, appeal and playability in late 2015 by Tripp Davis & Associates, Tapatio Springs Resort enjoys rave reviews from players of all skill levels. Our original design and routing has matured into a priceless gem with hundreds of mature Live Oaks and gorgeous waterways accentuated by the Hill Country terrain setting. Full, plush fairways and smooth running greens stir anticipation for each shot while the majestic views and Hill Country setting provide the most relaxing backdrop to a very enjoyable round of golf.

If Someone Was Looking To Golf In The Area, Why Should They Play Your Course?
Tapatio is enjoyable, fun and relaxing. Forget the hustle of the world today and relax with a challenging but wonderfully enjoyable round of golf at Tapatio Springs Resort. The golf experience here has been created with an true appeal to all the elements that are important to golfers today. Enjoy our beautiful setting, great course routing, excellent course conditions and friendly home style personal service all at a tremendous value.

What Tips or Local Knowledge Would You Provide To Help Them Score Better At Your Course?
Tapatio Springs Resort is set in a gorgeous valley, surrounded by hills with stunning views in every direction but with no fixed land mark where a ball will roll to or from. Our greens are smooth and can run very fast so playing from beneath the hole is always easier on the nerves - and your score.

Recent Awards or What You Are Most Proud About The Course?
Tapatio Springs Resort has been nominated to Golf Digest for Best Golf Course Renovation. The results will not be released until late this year but we are pleased with the nomination and looking forward to the final award results.
No matter the recognition from Industry awards, our true awards come straight form our guest comments. View our website, look us up in social medias and ask around. Golf at Tapatio Springs Resort is a great experience.

What Is The Signature, Most Talked About, or Most Photographed Hole?
It's hard to pick just one but Hole #12 will get anyone's attention. The shortest par4 on the course, hole #12 provides one of the most spectacular golf hole views anywhere. This hole has all the elements of a great golf hole. Risk/reward tempts every player to reach deep and hit the big tee ball on or close to the green while subtle slopes and yawning bunkers await those with less than an accurate, well struck shot. This green is perched high and slopes significantly from front to back and right to left.

What Is Your Favorite Hole? Any Tips to Play It?
Hole #8 is my favorite because it's such a demanding hole. To fit your tee shot on to this fairway you must target the right side because the fairway slope is from right to left and OB is down the left side. Your tee shot has to be accurate and LONG to manage this hole. Your second shot plays up hill to a large, well protected green that moves from left to right away from you. Save your best tee shot of the day for this hole and be happy with a second shot that finishes in the middle of the green. Study your putt carefully as this green has more subtle movements to it then any hole on the course.

Must Have Dish or Drink after the round at the 19th Hole?
Everything on the menus is AWESOME. For lunch, I recommend the Slow Smoked Baby Back Ribs. If I'm just enjoying a snack I'll share Nabor's Nachos (best you'll ever have). For dinner I indulge in Gulf Crispy Oysters and the Angel Hair Pasta and Diver Scallops!

Who Holds Course Record and What Was Their Score?
Unknown. There has been a lot of great players come through here which is evident by some of our the photos. Tom Watson and Jimmy Walker have played here and surely posted low rounds but any records of low rounds or course records were not maintained prior to our arrival in August 2014.

About: Brian Weis

Brian Weis Brian Weis is the mastermind behind GolfTrips.com, a vast network of golf travel and directory sites covering everything from the rolling fairways of Wisconsin to the sunbaked desert layouts of Arizona. If there’s a golf destination worth visiting, chances are, Brian has written about it, played it, or at the very least, found a way to justify a "business trip" there.

As a card-carrying member of the Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA), International Network of Golf (ING), Golf Travel Writers of America (GTWA), International Golf Travel Writers Association (IGTWA), and The Society of Hickory Golfers (SoHG), Brian has the credentials to prove that talking about golf is his full-time job. In 2016, his peers even handed him The Shaheen Cup, a prestigious award in golf travel writing—essentially the Masters green jacket for guys who don’t hit the range but still know where the best 19th holes are.

Brian’s love for golf goes way back. As a kid, he competed in junior and high school golf, only to realize that his dreams of a college golf scholarship had about the same odds as a 30-handicap making a hole-in-one. Instead, he took the more practical route—working on the West Bend Country Club grounds crew to fund his University of Wisconsin education. Little did he know that mowing greens and fixing divots would one day lead to a career writing about the best courses on the planet.

In 2004, Brian turned his golf passion into a business, launching GolfWisconsin.com. Three years later, he expanded his vision, and GolfTrips.com was born—a one-stop shop for golf travel junkies looking for their next tee time. Today, his empire spans all 50 states, and 20+ international destinations.

On the course, Brian is a weekend warrior who oscillates between a 5 and 9 handicap, depending on how much he's been traveling (or how generous he’s feeling with his scorecard). His signature move" A high, soft fade that his playing partners affectionately (or not-so-affectionately) call "The Weis Slice." But when he catches one clean, his 300+ yard drives remind everyone that while he may write about golf for a living, he can still send a ball into the next zip code with the best of them.

Whether he’s hunting down the best public courses, digging up hidden gems, or simply outdriving his buddies, Brian Weis is living proof that golf is more than a game—it’s a way of life.
