In the constant rush to remain current and to keep up with the nebulous beast called "progress," many cities bulldoze significant aspects of their past. Luckily, the west-Texas metropolis of El Paso has preserved the Plaza Theatre. If visitors to the city have the opportunity to see a show in this gorgeously restored architectural marvel, they should jump at the chance.
They should definitely not jump, however, from the Wyler Aerial Tramway, which soars to the top of Ranger Peak in the Franklin Mountains and grants tremendous views of El Paso and its adjacent city in Mexico, Juarez. And Franklin Mountains State Park delivers 37 square miles of rugged, adventure-filled terrain.
Another spectacular outdoor wonderland, located less than 30 miles from city center, is Hueco Tanks State Historic Site, where visitors can view pictographs, picnic, hike and rock climb, after viewing the required video.
Back in the city proper, the El Paso Zoo and the El Paso Museum of Art are fine place to while away an afternoon, and the National Border Patrol Museum will likely cause visitors to contemplate immigration issues.
When it's time to tee it up, golfers should head to Painted Dunes, which features 27 holes that scamper through the desert landscape as the abundant wildlife does. The rates are also incredibly affordable.
Butterfield Trail Golf Club is probably the region's best course. This Tom Fazio design is bounded by natural sand dunes, and so powerful is the pull of the "Old West" that instead of golf carts the place should use Conestoga wagons.
